Shopify e-shop development and work on an existing theme

Shopify is fast. Your page does not have to be.

The Shopify server answers in 0.73 seconds. On one store we measured, the main element of the page only appeared at 19.2 seconds - that gap was added by the theme, the apps and third-party scripts. We build and take over stores so it does not appear.

Three places where money leaks on Shopify, and none of them is the platform.

Shopify handles the checkout, the server performance and the security. The bill for a slow store is written by the theme, the apps and the international settings.

Speed

Theme and load time

The gap between 1.8 and 19.2 seconds weighed 10.6 MB. The theme's own code was 635 kB; on the live page there were three megabytes of it. The order in which speed actually gets fixed we have written down with the measurements.

  • Platform response and page build measured separately
  • Third-party scripts with defer, not twelve foreign outages
  • Fixes ordered by impact, not by score
Apps

App audit and theme cleanup

An uninstalled app stays in the theme: dead snippets, 6.9 MB of images and third-party scripts nobody maintains. How to run the audit yourself in an afternoon we describe with the commands.

  • A list of what the apps left behind in the theme
  • Third-party code with no owner off the landing page
  • The monthly app bill broken into its three parts
Expansion

Markets, translations and a second country

Hreflang is only generated for a market that has its own address, and a translation done by JavaScript does not exist for a search engine. Where SEO leaks during expansion we measured ourselves.

  • Subfolder, subdomain, or country domain
  • Hreflang checked before you add the market
  • A decision that holds for years

Measurement first, invoice afterwards.

01

We measure two numbers, not one

PageSpeed Insights mixes two different measurements and only one of them is about your page. Before fixing anything we separate the platform response from the page build - otherwise the wrong thing gets fixed and the numbers do not move.

02

Templates instead of fields come back

One theme after four years of edits held 323 templates across 193 structures and 723 disabled sections. When a banner is built as a template instead of a field in the admin, you pay for it on the second market.

03

We will also tell you not to buy Plus

Plus is not bought for speed, it is bought for the checkout, and headless has three preconditions without which it makes no sense. We will do the maths on your numbers, even when the answer is no.

From measurement to handover, step by step.

01

Measurement and analysis

We measure the platform response and the page build separately and go through the theme and the app list. The output is fixes ordered by impact, not a list of everything that could be improved.

02

Theme cleanup

Dead code, leftovers from uninstalled apps, third-party scripts with no defer. Whatever stays in the theme gets an owner and a reason for being there.

03

Development and changes

Sections and fields in the admin instead of branching templates, so the content is changed by your editors and not by a supplier. Every new structure has its reason written into the brief.

04

Expansion and handover

Markets, hreflang and translations checked before you add the market. Handover with a written record: what changed, why, and what was left untidied.

SPEEDShopify is supposed to be fast. Why is my store slow?
Because two different things are being measured. The Shopify server answered in 0.73 seconds, but the main element of the page only appeared at 19.2 seconds. The gap weighed 10.6 MB and was made by the theme, the apps and third-party scripts. The full measurement and the order in which it gets fixed is in Why a fast Shopify is slow.
APPSI uninstalled the apps. Did that help?
Usually only partly. An app does not touch only its own files - the theme keeps its snippets, images and scripts, which go on loading and which nobody maintains. You can run the app audit yourself in an afternoon; the walkthrough with the commands is in App audit: what apps take from you even after uninstalling.
THEMEWill you take over a theme from another supplier?
Yes, we do it regularly. We start with an inventory: how many templates the theme holds, how many of them genuinely have their own structure, and how many sections are disabled. On one theme after four years that was 323 templates across 193 structures and 723 disabled sections - what to do about it is in When templates get out of hand.
COSTWhat does a speed-up or a theme cleanup cost?
We quote after measuring, because the price turns on how much foreign code is in the theme and how many apps are keeping it alive. The opening analysis - two numbers and the fixes in order of impact - reaches you before we write a quote.
PLUSShould we move to Shopify Plus or go headless?
Plus is not bought for speed, it is bought for the checkout, and B2B on its own is not a reason to move. Headless has three preconditions without which it makes no sense. A worked payback calculation you can put your own numbers into is in Shopify Plus and headless: when it makes sense.
EXPANSIONWe are preparing a second market. What should we watch?
That hreflang is only generated for a market with its own address, that the automatic redirect does not apply to crawlers, and that a translation done in JavaScript does not exist for a search engine. Six checks you can run in one afternoon are in Shopify Markets and translations.

Send us the store address and the list of apps. You get two numbers back - the platform response and the page build - and the fixes in order of impact. Even if you end up not hiring us.
